The History of Sectrol Security

There’s an old saying, “if you want something done right, do it yourself.” Perhaps it shaped Ken Belsar’s thinking when he launched what would become Sectrol in 1972. Ken, the International Harvester dealer in Ballarat, had been robbed. It wasn’t a big job but, nevertheless, it had him annoyed.

And it got him thinking.

At the time, Ballarat lacked a local security company, so Ken decided to start his own and Sectrol was born. What essentially commenced as a technology company building monitored electronic security systems, has over the last 45 plus years, become one of the leading integrated security businesses in Victoria and still managed by Ken’s son, Grant.

Having established its first premises in Sebastopol, Sectrol has remained at the heart of the Ballarat community with its current headquarters in Armstrong Street, South. In 2021 Sectrol completed its first strategic plan. Between 2022 and 2024, the company implemented this Plan which included a completed redevelopment of operating architecture together with a significant investment in state-of-the-art security management and business systems as well as new processes and procedures.

In 2023, this initiative was recognised when Sectrol was named Family Business of the Year in the Federation University Commerce Ballarat Excellence Awards. In 2025, Sectrol continues to focus on delivery excellent customer service, with the capacity to extend it reach to new markets across Central/Western Victoria.
